Can Invisalign Fix an Overbite?

TeamInvisalign

An overbite is one of the most common orthodontic problems in patients. It means that the top row of teeth extends too far over the bottom row of teeth when you are biting down. An overbite can cause many negative things including headaches, jaw pain as well as excess enamel wear or fracture.  Even more importantly, the existence of an overbite, specifically an over jet, can indicate a compromised airway, which can become life threatening if left untreated.

Just a few decades ago, the only way to fix an orthodontic issue was with the use of braces or orthopedic devices. Since the introduction of Invisalign, there are now more options for patients to align their bite. Invisalign is capable of many of the same corrections as traditional braces, but can it fix an overbite? Learn more about Invisalign and what it can do for your smile.

What is Invisalign?

Before we discuss the capabilities of Invisalign, it helps to understand what it is. Invisalign consists of clear plastic trays called aligners that fit over the teeth. The aligners gently shift your teeth into the proper position over time. At the start of your treatment you receive a complete set of aligners that you will wear throughout your treatment. You will be instructed to wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, switching to the next set in order every two weeks until your treatment is complete. You will need to wear your aligners as much as possible to achieve the desired results, as much as 22 hours a day, only taking them out to eat and care for your teeth.

Treatment of Overbite is Possible With Invisalign

Invisalign is capable of correcting mild to moderate overbites. The majority of patients start with an overbite that falls somewhere within this range and will be an ideal candidate for Invisalign.

How Does Invisalign Correct an Overbite?

The way an overbite is corrected is to shift the teeth into proper alignment in both the upper and lower jaw. Invisalign aligners do just that, gradually shift the teeth into a new position that allows the teeth to meet properly when the upper and lower jaws come together. The top teeth should only slightly overlap the bottom teeth when in proper alignment.

Can Invisalign Correct a Severe Overbite?

Unfortunately a severe overbite may need stronger force to shift the teeth into proper alignment. This is when traditional metal braces are most effective, as they are capable of exerting a stronger force on the teeth in order to shift them more significantly. Rubber bands can be used with traditional braces to exert an even greater force on the teeth in order to align the bite.

Benefits of Invisalign

More and more patients are choosing Invisalign due to the many benefits:

  • Invisible. The clear plastic aligners are virtually invisible on the teeth, allowing patients to straighten their teeth more discreetly than with traditional braces.
  • Comfortable. The aligners are made of smooth, flexible plastic that fits snugly against the teeth, minimizing irritation of the soft tissues of the mouth like the tongue and the inside of the lips and cheeks.
  • Convenient. The aligners are removable for eating and caring for your teeth. There are no food restrictions and no need for special flossing tools as there are with traditional braces.
